Which are the three hospitals of Scarborough?

They are the three hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Scarborough Health Network, including Birchmount Hospital (former Grace Hospital), Scarborough General Hospital and Centenary Hospital.

Did the Ontario government recently make an announcement that over $1.0 billion will be funded for infrastructure enhancements at SHN hospitals?

After decades of being left behind, there is still a lot more catching up to do. This government commitment is only the beginning.

  • Scarborough hospitals have been struggling with outdated facilities to accommodate high patient volumes. The General hospital has the oldest operating room in Ontario!
  • There is insufficient dialysis capacity for treating a rapidly growing population of renal failure patients.
  • 25% of Toronto's total population plus those from nearby cities, namely Markham and Richmond Hill, are also under the care of these three hospitals. Overall patient volumes at the emergency departments of these hospitals are 250% of design capacity.

Why do the hospitals still need raise funds?

You may not know this, but Ontario hospitals are required to raise 100% of funds for the purchase of new equipment and 10% of all capital projects. Also, Government funds can be used for projects such as infrastructure enhancements. But funds for equipment is the mission of hospital foundations and the community.

To meet the challenges head-on, Scarborough Health Network Foundation need to raise the same percentage of community share funding for capital projects and major equipment purchases.

What new atmosphere and new hope will the donations bring for the public?

t is the aims of Scarborough Health Network Foundation to raise the necessary funds from community-at-large to realize priority projects that will improve the patient experience, enhance access to health care, and ensure a healthier future for the Scarborough community. Also, provide funds to equipment purchases support the needs of the following new facilities.

  • Medical Imaging and Vascular Centre - building a new, 36,000 sq. ft. concourse to bring all diagnostic imaging services into one location at the General hospital, ensuring a more efficient and patient-focused facility.
  • Bridletowne Neighborhood Center - creating a community hub for the prevention, treatment and ongoing management of chronic kidney disease.
  • Birchmount Hospital site expansion - an addition of 200 beds to ease the waiting time for patients who need to be hospitalized.
